He is Holding All Things Together
I gave this devotion to the women in my Bible Study and thought I would share it here. A link to the awesome devotional book I reference will be at the bottom.

CBS Devotion - April 7, 2020 - He is Holding All Things Together
As many of you know, we are a homeschooling family. What you may not know is that our family is also incredibly geeky and loves science. Thus, when I saw a devotional book for children to learn about God while learning about science, I knew this was one that we had to add to our daily reading stack. I thought that learning about how creation teaches us about God would provide helpful object lessons for my six year old and would help her learn to see God’s work all around her. Little did I know how much those object lessons would change and shape how I see God and how often I am reminded of His goodness.
During the winter, we read a devotion about “laminin.” I sort of remembered from high school biology that laminin had something to do with cells but I was about to learn a whole lot more.
Your body is made up of 37.2 trillion cells. And those cells need some sort of “glue” to hold them together. The glue that does that important job is called laminin. Laminin is literally holding your body together right now.
It takes an electron microscope to be able to see laminin, but if you were able to look in one, you would see that laminin is shaped like a cross. Your body is literally held together by trillions of tiny crosses.
The devotion went on to tell kids that whenever they feel overwhelmed they can look at their bodies and remember that God - the one who loved us so much he sent His son to die for us - is holding everything together and we can trust Him.
And I haven’t been able to get that image out of my head.
Think about it - the God who made the vast universe (and trust me, there’s been lots of math and diagrams and attempts to understand the vastness of the universe God made in our home - I told you, we’re geeks!) and spun stars and planets into motion. That same God put tiny reminders of His love throughout your body. Those reminders of His love are holding you together this very minute. Physically. And spiritually.
As Colossians 1:15-20 says, He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
Or Hebrews 1:3, He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.
Hebrews 2:8 reminds us, Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him.
And then there’s Isaiah 40:26, Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these?
He who brings out their host by number, calling them all by name; by the greatness of his might and because he is strong in power, not one is missing.
God is always holding all things together. In him ALL THINGS hold together.
When a loved one dies, He is holding all things together.
When a job is lost, He is holding all things together.
When our hearts fight against anxiety and despair, He is holding all things together.
When we lose a baby, He is holding all things together.
When things don’t go as planned, He is holding all things together.
When somebody wounds us deeply, He is holding all things together.
When we feel lost in decision making, He is holding all things together.
When we feel weak, He is holding all things together.
When an unexpected test result comes back, He is holding all things together.
When Covid-19 strikes and everything changes, He is holding all things together.
Next time you feel like things are falling apart, I pray that you will look no farther than the hand on your arm and remember that He is holding all things together.
I’d like to close by reading that Colossians passage one more time.
